I wish I did this at 16!

April 26, 2010

Abby Sunderland, the 16-year-old California girl attempting to sail solo around the world is ending her quest to become the youngest to make the trip nonstop. She’s heading to South Africa for repairs to her boat’s main auto pilot.

Instead I was watching dragonball :( .

Good Luck Abby!

And 2010′s theme strong goes to..

MVPuppets….

February 27, 2010

Just to start this off, while I absolutely love the original installment of MVPuppet commercials back at the near end of the last years (2009) regular season of the NBA, I have to say that the Kobe Bryant, aka “Black Mamba” aka “Unstoppable” puppet looks way more like the hated, busted ass, awesome punk ass JR Smith of the rivaled Denver Nuggets than the ultimate Kobe.

You be the judge…

Marvelous Musical Moments

February 25, 2010

Music is one of best inventions man has ever created. Its an intangible tangible created by the hands of man to push/pull, punish/reward, enlighten/dumb down the listener at any moment in life.

Through my life I’ve listened to a super amount music. The following are those very special moments that only I can cherish. They are the way a guitar gets licked, a falsetto lands on the beat, a trumpet gets blown. They are the moments that make me smile….

Frankie Ruiz – Una Canita Al Aire.  What would a life be without those small moments when all you do is work work work. At the 3:15 mark the Cuatro guitar kicks in for a majestic solo that brings infinite smiles :) to those bland days of life…

Queen – Don’t Stop Me Now. A song about just enjoying life and not giving a fruck. At the 3:08 mark, the indelible Freddie Mercury with his eternal voices does a lot of la la la’s that absolutely brings the house down. Pure bliss….

Nas – Life’s A Bitch. Nas and AZ brings an incredible set of verses over an equally smooth Gap Band sampled beat. This song is about the trials of a young life and it’s bleak out look.  At the 2:42 mark, Nas’s father Olu Dara brings this masterpiece to a close with one of the illest trumpet solo’s I have heard ever ever ever. Get me a blunt stat!

Willie Colon and Hector Lavoe – Canto A Borinquen. An ode to his home Puerto Rico, Hector sings one for the ages. It’s the beginning of the second verse at the 1:05 mark. Hector begins to sing as Yomo Toro’s cuatro guitar is on fire in this crescendo of sound that absolutely sends chills ever time I hear it. Happy times!

Cannibal Ox – A B-Boy’s Alpha. El Producto on the beat. The beat is hard as fuck. There is continuous organ key playing throughout the entire song. Vast Aire and Vordul each spit a magnificent verse followed by a volley of scratching. The dj goes in with the scratching and sample drops until this one small moment at the 3:30 mark where the drum track resets itself and the chaos of the dj stops and the drums set back in, the organ is heard loud and clear as if angels are decending on you. It’s absolute charm…..

Ra Ra Riot – Can You Tell. Such a beautiful band. At the .58 mark the lead singer’s deliver on those ever so precious “Oh baby baby please” are so awesome. I would love to be in his shoes singing that one..Smiles :)

And that will be all for this installment. More to come when the moment is right, until then good night!

A wonderful combination…

Little did I know that this was an unofficial remix to Lykke Li’s “A Little Bit”. They sound super dope together. They should get up one day….

Kanye’s best beat

February 23, 2010

Hate him or love him or both!, Kanye without a doubt has made some stellar music. The boy has skills.

I’ve heard most of his beats from his youngin days till the present. There are plenty to love, but the one for me that stands out the most is the beat he crafted for Alicia Keys. The song is “You don’t know my name” off of Alicia’s second album “The Diary Of Alicia Keys”. A beautiful old soul sounding ode to the love who doesn’t know he is being loved. This beat makes me want to create music for realz for realz. Kanye used Main Ingredients “let me prove my love to you” at the 1.45 marker to its fullest. It’s like angels descended on the track . Alicia provides the lovely lyrics full of confidence, passion and bravado that make you want to be that dude she thinks about. She also co produced the track. Oh baby girl if only..

Aside from the song itself comes the video. Alicia is a waitress in a Harlem diner where the lovely love interest played by the ever so cool and thoughtful Mos Def, comes in to eat on the daily not knowing that the gorgeous girl in the braids is wishfully thinking….Go get em Alicia….

Kanye it’s my personal favorite because it hits the inner most corners of my yearning soul and for that thank you son..Stop being a dick!

A MASTEPIECE

My studies in Design and Management have taught me to be precise when creating a marketing plan, a design concept, or a merchandising plan. Planning and research would prove to be essential in the success of the implementation and reaction of the project in real world terms. I understood that concept quite well. Graduating from college and setting forth into the world proved to be quite different. You can plan all you want but in the end a lot of spontaneity and luck go into success of things. Fuck it, the most worth while things that have ever been created on this small world have come down to luck and spontaneity. At least that’s how I see it. I can scrap that up to my personality I suppose. I create a lot of things from the gut. Let the chips fall as they may as they say. Like Miles Davis and the creative process of “Kind of Blue”, he gave his co musicians a basic skeleton of song structure and let the musicians play their souls out. The results was his masterpiece “Kind of Blue”. Now I can say that that process will prove to create sour fruits because of the lack of control of all the ingredients but somewhere down the line you will be creating the plate of plates. Like the best chefs, they experimented with a base idea and somewhere along the line they created the best version of that meal that they could have. It all depended on their content and context of the time, the ingredients they used and how they put it all together….So enjoy that next sandwich. Make it the best sandwich you can make. It will be one of one and never taste the same after that.

Milk Does a Body Great

February 7, 2010

I have been on the Team Milk since the wee age of  1 month. It feels so great to drink it. To bad it goes bad and stinks and taste like shit but aside from that it’s pure awesomeness. One of my earliest memories of my love affair with milk is the indelibly eternal Tom and Jerry cartoons from last century. They always made that milk so scrumptious that all I wanted was a glass. In this episode entitled “Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde”. Tom is so fed up with Jerry always drinking his milk that he poisons the batch and instead of killing the always dubious Jerry, it makes him into a temporary Hulk. Mayhem ensues and laughs are inevitable. The ending is super epic! Enjoy with a tall glass!

Soul Food…

January 20, 2010

Urban Dictionary defines soul food as “An African-American meal usually including macaroni, fried chicken, collard greens, yams, mashed patatoes, rolls and occassionally sweet peas. These delicacies are typically mastered by one’s grandmother and cannot be duplicated by anyone else.”

While that is true beyond a doubt, and I have had my run ins with true Soul Food, I have to expand the definition by just a little.

My soul food is a morning meal. It became apparent in the beginning of this year after having a reunion with my huge family. We are of Colombian decent. And while there are many different meals that fill up the lunch and dinner sections of the day, breakfast seams to be the Triumphant Meal for us all. Everybody looked forward to the morning meal because it meant morninglight, a nice breeze, beautiful family and a spread consisting Arepas con queso, Perico (scrambled eggs cooked with chopped onions, tomatoes, cilantro and a few spices here and there), Biscochitos, Pan de Bono and finally chocolate con queso and or cafe. All this prepared by the hands of sisters that received these very recipes from their mother.

If Perico wasn’t prepared then it was switched out by a famous omelet made by my mother. This baby will put a koolaid smile on your face. It is so famous that a cousin who hadn’t had one in 10+ yrs specifically asked for one just last week. I always tried to make one but was always unsuccessful at the point of the flip. I attempted to make one after a 2 yr hiatus. This time around I did it and it was slamming. I have to say that it was slightly off from my mothers but thats only because only she can make it like she can. Its the soul food rule. In time mine will be a specialty as well. It was passed down from my grandmother to my mother to myself and that is awesome. Here is the simple recipe. Enjoy!

Ingredients
1 egg
1 slice of ham
1 slice of american cheese
salt
pepper
butter

Execution
Take egg, add your touch of salt and pepper. I always do more salt than pepper but thats just me :) Scramble. Take slice of ham and chop up into small pieces. Take pan and butter her up. Medium heat and spread butter throughout the pan. Add egg and make it spread around pan slowly till most of it cooks. While there is still some raw egg on the top, place ham evenly on one side of egg. Take cheese and strip it and place her gently (she is godly) on top of the ham. Now take a spatula and take other end of egg and flip onto the other end of the egg to create a nice empananda looking thing. Let cook on each side for about fifteen seconds and plate it. It takes some practice to get the timing right but when you get it right she is firm on the outside and nice and juicy on the inside. None of that dry egg feeling in other omelets i’ve had in my short life. Serve it up with your favorite and bam! a wonderful breakfast…Enjoy your morning.
